American Studies

The Master's programme American Studies is open for application to all students with:

A university Bachelor’s diploma

The Master’s in American Studies is open for application to all students with a Bachelor’s diploma from the UvA or from another accredited university, in:

  • History

The programme is also open to students with one of the following Bachelor’s diplomas, provided they have successfully followed a Minor in American Studies or 30 ECTS credits worth of courses relating to American culture and history. The Examinations Board will decide whether you meet this prerequisite on the basis of your application file.

  • English Language and Culture
  • Media and Culture
  • Communication Science
  • Political Science
  • Sociology
  • European Studies

The level of the Bachelor's diploma from a foreign higher education institution must be equal to three years of Dutch university education, to be judged by the Examinations Board.

English language requirements

New Master's students should be able to speak, read, write and understand English at an advanced academic level. Check too see if you meet the English language requirements or whether you may need to take an official English language test.
