Studying Greek and Roman antiquity at the UvA

The Master's programme in Ancient History offers students a stimulating environment in which to study a broad range of historical issues pertaining to the ancient world. The course is unique in that it offers a joint degree programme in which the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit collaborate, allowing students to become acquainted with the specialisations of a wide range of staff members of both universities. Students will follow a focused programme of courses and be able to develop their own interests within the field of Greek and Roman antiquity.

The Master's programme in Ancient History offers students:

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the political, social, cultural and religious history of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.
  • Intensive classes consisting of small groups and direct personal contact with tutors.
  • Thorough training in analysing complicated historical issues using divergent source material as well as developing reporting skills (both orally and in writing) on historical debates in Greek and Roman history.

Tania Patel, Master's in Ancient History student:

FGw / Tania Patel

'The UvA Master's in Ancient History was one of the most challenging, eye-opening and beautiful experiences of my life. I learned more than I thought was possible in a year and I developed intellectually as well as personally. What really made this programme unique, however, was the teachers: we were taught by some of the leading professors in the field and they gave us all the supervision we needed to grow academically.'

Ancient History in Amsterdam

The Master's programme in Ancient History is one of three Classics and Ancient Civilizations programmes offered by the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA), a joint venture of the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam – for the other programmes, see: Ancient Studies and Classics. ACASA enables you to benefit from the expertise of two universities and allows you to choose from a wide range of courses, interest fields, and specialisations.

Amsterdam also has its own Classical Antiquity museum, the Allard Pierson museum, which houses a special collection of artefacts from Egypt, as well as a large collection of ceramics, glass and bronzes from Greek and Roman Antiquity. The museum is closely involved with the education of ACASA.
