The Metal students alternately work on site on large objects and in the Ateliergebouw on smaller objects. The varied properties of metal and the complexity of the objects, for example the use, significance and various ageing mechanisms of the material, ensure that the students are offered very diverse workshops to gain knowledge of the breadth of the field.

The properties of metal conservation

Practical training is provided in the many different metal alloys and manufacturing and decoration techniques to foster a better understanding. The characterisation of metal objects, the assessment of the extent of decay and the treatment options (with respect to the context and significance of the object) are taught both in theory and practice. At the end of the Master’s phase, students are expected to be able to combine theory and practice and apply this to treatments. This is practiced further in the Advanced Professional Programme phase.
