Contemporary cases

The curriculum focuses on genocide and mass atrocities in the 20th century, including the Holocaust, Rwandan Genocide, Armenian Genocide and other contemporary cases.

Broad perspective

The programme seeks broad engagement with genocide, ranging from the causes and representations in the arts to transitional justice following mass atrocities.

Ideal study environment

The programme’s location in the Netherlands offers several advantages including the opportunity to visit genocide-related sites and the international criminal tribunals in The Hague.

Collaboration with NIOD

You will have access to a specialised war, Holocaust, and genocide studies library, as well as archival materials from the NIOD and their researchers’ expertise.

  1. You are interested in mass violence, genocide, Holocaust, war, conflict, atrocities, global affairs, human rights and transitional justice from a scholarly perspective.
  2. You have a strong engagement in current politics and contemporary society.
  3. You are interested in historical, comparative and contemporary research.
  4. You are interested in multidisciplinary research (i.e. history, sociology, anthropology, political sciences, psychology, law and journalism).
  5. You are keen to actively contribute to in-class discussions and debates.
  6. You are able to read and understand complex historical, sociological and legal texts (in English).
  7. You are self-motivated, critical and can work independently, and you know how to critically engage with primary sources, secondary literature and theory.

Holocaust and Genocide Studies is an accredited degree programme of History. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a legally accredited Master’s degree in History and the title Master of Arts (MA).
