The programme prepares you for a wide range of careers in theatre and performance: from scholarly research, arts administration and theatre in education to archival work and cultural programming. You learn to reflect on, research and write articulately about theatre and performance in its aesthetic, historical and trans-national dimensions.

The job market

Graduates of the Master's in Theatre Studies are qualified to pursue a career in diverse areas, including theatre or theatre criticism, government institutions, cultural organisations, archives, museums and international festivals. Many of our students become closely associated with the theatre world during their studies, thereby acquiring vital experience and connections that help them to establish themselves professionally.

Graduates of the Master's in Theatre Studies make their careers in:

  • the theatre field, as organisors, educators, critics, archivists, public speakers, producers, and as cultural actors in the broadest sense;
  • government institutions, cultural organisations, archives, musea and international festivals.

Others work independently or have set up their own organisations.

An academic career

The programme is also suited to students interested in pursuing an academic or research-oriented career. Those interested in pursuing a PhD are supported in developing a research topic throughout the course of their Master's studies, gaining experience in publishing in academic journals as well as attending and organising symposia. Close supervision is provided by faculty members in accordance with their area of expertise. The department also boasts of a range of international contacts and is affiliated with international research networks such as the International Federation for Theatre Research and Performance Studies international.

Teacher Training

The one-year Master's in Theatre Studies can be combined with an additional one-year Teacher Training Programme in Arts Education (in Dutch), which qualifies you to be a general arts teacher in Dutch primary and secondary schools.

Further specialisations in Art Criticism and Archiving and Documentation are in the pipeline in the coming years.
