Study programme

Philosophy (Research MA)

Curriculum

Core courses and electives are offered in the form of seminars, which are attended by 10 to 25 international and Dutch students. Tutorials are given in small groups, which are supervised by specialists and usually initiated by staff members. Students are also at liberty to organise a tutorial, granted they are able to find a suitable supervisor.

Programme structure

The Research Master's programme Philosophy comprises 120 ECTS credits:

  • 90 credits for core courses, electives and tutorials
  • 30 credits for a Research Master's thesis (including 12 credits for a Research seminar)

Detailed course information

For detailed course information, please see the UvA Course Catalogue.

Credit transfer

Students who show exceptional promise during a regular or professional programme are encouraged to continue their studies in a research programme. Once students are admitted to the research programme, they can transfer credits earned during their previous course of study towards their Research Master's degree. The Examinations Board determines which courses qualify for transfer.

Thesis

The Master's thesis (18 credits) reports on research carried out by the student under the supervision of two academic staff members involved in the programme. The subject of the thesis must be mutually agreed upon by the student and academic adviser(s).
