Pre-Master's American Studies

Please note: this pre-Master's programme is taught in English and is only accessible to students with a Dutch or other EU nationality.

Please note: If you have obtained an academic Bachelor’s degree, you do not need to take the two Academic Skills courses (2x6 ECTS), which means that the programme will comprise 30 ECTS instead of 42 ECTS.

First semester:

  • Academic Skills I (6 ECTS, block 1)
  • American History, Beginning to End (12 ECTS, block 1 and 2)
  • Academic Skills II (6 ECTS, block 3)
  • The Craft of American Studies (6 ECTS, block 3)

Second semester:

  • Philosophy of the Humanities: Usable Pasts (6 ECTS, block 4)
  • Metropolitan America (6 ECTS, block 5)

Procedure: enrolment via Studielink

If you wish to gain access to the Master’s programme American Studies by means of this pre-Master’s programme, you must first submit an enrolment application in Studielink for the Master’s History / Geschiedenis. This means that you cannot enrol directly in the pre-Master’s, but that you must follow the application procedure for the Master’s programme as described on the page Application and admission. Please complete all of the steps of the application process, including enrolment in MyInfo and the submission of all of the required application documents.

The Graduate School of Humanities’ Admissions Office will assess your prior education. If you are able to meet the entry requirements for the Master’s by doing the pre-Master’s programme, you will be notified of this. Only then should you enrol in the pre-Master’s via Studielink. If you successfully complete the pre-Master’s programme within a year, you will automatically be admitted to the Master’s American Studies.

Application deadline

The application deadline for a pre-Master’s corresponds with that of the Master’s you wish to do. For the Master's American Studies, the application deadline is:

  • 1 March 2020: All applicants with a non-EU/EEA nationality
  • 15 May 2020: All applicants with a Dutch or other EU/EEA nationality*

* If you are an applicant with an EU/EEA nationality and wish to apply for housing, you must submit your application by 1 March.

Costs

The tuition fee rate for a pre-Master’s programme in the academic year 2020-2021 is €35.71 per ECTS, with a maximum of €2,143. This means that for a 42 ECTS pre-Master’s programme, the fee is €1,499.82; for a 30 ECTS programme, the fee is €1,071.30.

Alternative routes

If you are doing an academic Bachelor's programme, completing the minor American Studies will also allow you to meet the entry requirements for the Master's American Studies.
