Pre-Master's European Studies

Please note: this pre-Master's programme is taught in English.

Target group

The pre-Master’s programme European Studies is aimed at students who have a degree from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences (HBO) or an academic Bachelor’s degree that does not grant direct access to the tracks of the Master’s programme European Studies. If you have obtained an academic Bachelor’s degree, you do not need to take the two Academic Skills courses (2x6 ECTS), which means that the programme will comprise 30 ECTS instead of 42 ECTS.

You will follow one of the programmes listed below. All of them give access to all of the Master’s programmes listed above, but we strongly recommend that you choose the variant that corresponds with the Master’s you are looking to do.

    You have a choice between two programmes: European Culture or European History.

    European Culture

    First semester:

    • Academic Skills I (6 ECTS, block 1)
    • Articulating Europe: Cultural Histories of a Political Idea (12 ECTS, block 1 and 2)
    • Academic Skills II (6 ECTS, block 3)

    Second semester:

    • Literary Representations of Europe and the Other (6 ECTS, block 4)
    • Philosophy of Humanities (6 ECTS, block 4)
    • Spain: Mediterranean Microcosm of Europe (6 ECTS, block 5)

    European History

    First semester:

    • The Ordering of Europe in the 20th and 21st Century (6 ECTS, block 1)
    • Academic Skills I (6 ECTS, block 1)
    • The Construction of Modern European History (6 ECTS, block 2)
    • Academic Skills II (6 ECTS, block 3)

    Second semester:

    • Race, Rights, and Humanity in European History (6 ECTS, block 4)
    • Philosophy of Humanities (6 ECTS, block 4)
    • European Memory and Heritage (6 ECTS, block 5)

    First semester:

    First semester:

    • 20th Century Russian and Soviet History (6 ECTS, block 1)

    • The Trials of Communism: Justice and Ideology in East/Central Europe (6 ECTS, block 2)

    Second semester:

    • Russian pop culture: Movies, TV and the internet (6 ECTS, block 4)
    • Philosophy of Humanities (6 ECTS, block 4)
    • Post-Yugoslav States and Societies in Transition: From War to Transitional Justice (6 ECTS, block 5)

Procedure: enrolment via Studielink

If you wish to gain access to one of the Master’s programmes listed above by means of this pre-Master’s programme, you must first submit an enrolment application in Studielink for the Master’s European Studies / Europese Studies. You cannot directly enrol in the pre-Master’s. Please take the Master’s application deadline into account!

The selection committee will assess your prior education. If you are able to meet the entry requirements for the Master’s by doing the pre-Master’s programme, you will be notified of this. If you successfully complete the pre-Master’s programme within a year, you will automatically be admitted to the Master’s programme of your choosing. The pre-Master’s European Studies gives access to all of the Master’s programmes listed above, regardless of which variant you are doing. Naturally, we strongly recommend that you choose the variant that corresponds with the Master’s you are looking to do.
