The Master’s programme Classics is a small-scale academic programme that covers a wide range of fields such as Greek and Latin literature and linguistics, ancient Christianity, Byzantinology, ancient philosophy, intertextuality, narratology, and reception studies.
In this Master's, you will analyse sources more thoroughly than during your Bachelor’s phase and will learn to handle academic instruments. This will enable you to apply your specialism within Classical Antiquity to texts and other cultural phenomena from later periods, and to get acquainted with relevant contemporary discussions.
This Master’s degree programme is offered by two universities. The University of Amsterdam and VU Amsterdam have combined their expertise on the field of ancient history and archaeology in the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA). This merging of specialists from various academic disciplines creates a stimulating environment for collaboration and study.
Classics is an accredited degree programme of Classics and Ancient Civilizations. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a legally accredited Master’s degree in Classics and Ancient Civilizations and the title Master of Arts (MA).
Once you enrol at the UvA, you will also automatically be enrolled as a guest student at VU Amsterdam. If you enrol at VU Amsterdam, the exact opposite applies. Please note that you will receive one diploma from the university at which you originally enrolled.
