This programme grants access to the following Master's tracks in Linguistics: MA General Linguistics and MA Language and Society. It does not grant access to the Research Master's Linguistics and Communication.
Please note: this pre-Master's programme is taught in English and is only accessible to students with a Dutch or other EU nationality.
For students who are doing the programme Leraar/Tolk Nederlandse Gebarentaal (Teacher/Interpreter Dutch Sign Language) at the Hogeschool Utrecht (University of Applied Sciences Utrecht), the UvA offers a minor which, when combined with this pre-Master's programme, grants access to the Master's General Linguistics.

You will follow one of the programmes listed below. All of them give access to all of the Master’s programmes listed above, but we strongly recommend that you choose the variant that corresponds with the Master’s you are looking to do.
Please note: If you have obtained an academic Bachelor’s degree, you do not need to take the two Academic Skills courses (2x6 ECTS), which means that the programme will comprise 30 ECTS instead of 42 ECTS.

If you wish to gain access to one of the Master’s programmes listed above by means of this pre-Master’s programme, you must first submit an enrolment application in Studielink for the Master’s Linguistics / Taalwetenschappen 60 EC. This means that you cannot enrol directly in the pre-Master’s, but that you must follow the application procedure for the Master’s programme as described on the Application and admission of the Master's of your choosing. Please complete all of the steps of the application process, including enrolment in MyInfo and the submission of all of the required application documents.
The selection committee will assess your prior education. If you are able to meet the entry requirements for the Master’s by doing the pre-Master’s programme, you will be notified of this. If you successfully complete the pre-Master’s programme within a year, you will automatically be admitted to the Master’s programme of your choosing. The pre-Master’s Linguistics gives access to all of the Master’s programmes listed above, regardless of which variant you are doing. Naturally, we strongly recommend that you choose the variant that corresponds with the Master’s you are looking to do.
Application deadline
The application deadline for a pre-Master’s corresponds with that of the Master’s you wish to do. For the Master's General Linguistics and Language and Society, the application deadline is:
* If you are an applicant with an EU/EEA nationality and wish to apply for housing, you must submit your application by 1 March.
The tuition fee rate for a pre-Master’s programme in the academic year 2021-2022 is €36.13 per ECTS, with a maximum of €2,168. This means that for a 42 ECTS pre-Master’s programme, the fee is €1,517.60; for a 30 ECTS programme, the fee is €1,084.
