Pre-Master's Literary Studies

This programme grants access to the following tracks of the Master's Literary Studies: MA Comparative Literature, MA English Literature and Culture and MA Literature, Culture and Society. It does not grant access to the research Master's Literary Studies.

Please note: this pre-Master's programme is taught in English and is only accessible to students with a Dutch or other EU nationality.

Sample programme

If you have obtained an academic Bachelor’s degree, you do not need to take the two Academic Skills courses (2x6 ECTS), which means that the programme will comprise 30 ECTS instead of 42 ECTS.

First semester

  • Academic Skills I (12 ECTS, block 1 and 3)
  • English Literature 4: Literary Theory (6 ECTS, block 1)
  • Arts, Science and Technology (6 ECTS, block 2)
  • Restricted-choice elective: track-specific course 1 (6 ECTS, block 2)

Second semester

  • Philosophy of the Humanities (6 ECTS, block 1)
  • Restricted-choice elective: Track-specific Course 1 (6 EC, block 1 or 2)

Procedure: enrolment via Studielink

If you wish to gain access to one of the Master’s programmes listed above by means of this pre-Master’s programme, you must first submit an enrolment application in Studielink for the Master’s Literary Studies / Letterkunde 60 ECTS. This means that you cannot enrol directly in the pre-Master’s, but that you must follow the application procedure for the Master’s programme as described on the Application and admission page of the Master's of your choosing. Please complete all of the steps of the application process, including enrolment in MyInfo and the submission of all of the required application documents.

The selection procedure will assess your prior education. If you are able to meet the entry requirements for the Master’s by doing the pre-Master’s programme, you will be notified of this. Only then should you enrol in the pre-Master’s via Studielink. If you successfully complete the pre-Master’s programme within a year, you will automatically be admitted to the Master’s programme of your choosing.

Application deadline

The application deadline for a pre-Master’s corresponds with that of the Master’s you wish to do. For the Master's Comparative Literature, English Literature and Culture, and Literature, Culture and Society, the application deadline is:

  • 1 March: All applicants with a non-EU/EEA nationality
  • 15 May: All applicants with a Dutch or other EU/EEA nationality*

* If you are an applicant with an EU/EEA nationality and wish to apply for housing, you must submit your application by 1 March.


The tuition fee rate for a pre-Master’s programme in the academic year 2021-2022 is €36.13 per ECTS, with a maximum of €2,168. This means that for a 42 ECTS pre-Master’s programme, the fee is €1,517.60; for a 30 ECTS programme, the fee is €1,084.
