Each semester, you are required to register for courses during the official registration period. When you register for a course, you are automatically registered for the exams and the Canvas page for that course.
Please note: the information on this site does not apply to exchange students. They should follow the course registration procedure for exchange students.
Make sure to register during the official registration period, because only then will you be guaranteed a place in your compulsory courses. The registration periods for Bachelor's and Master’s courses at the Faculty of Humanities are:
First semester 2021-2022: Thursday, 10 June (08:00) - Tuesday, 22 June 2021 (13:00).
Second semester 2021-2022: Thursday, 2 December (08:00) - Wednesday 15 december 2021 (13:00).

Follow the step-by-step guide in order to register for courses:
The entry requirements for the courses are described in the Course Catalogue. In some cases, you may not meet the entry requirements at the time of registration, although you may do so on short term. In this case your registration will be conditional.
The Education Desk will verify that you have met the entry requirements as soon as the results of the previous semester’s exams have been registered. If your study results do not meet the entry requirements, you will lose your right to follow the course and your registration will be cancelled.
Please note: at the Faculty of Humanities, Master's students are not allowed to register for Bachelor's courses.
If you do not meet the entry requirements for a course, but you can demonstrate that you have the required prior knowledge, you can request a dispensation from the entry requirements from the Examinations Board. You must do this before the course registration period closes by using the 'Other requests form' below.
We recommend following no more than 30 ECTS worth of courses per semester. This is equivalent to a study load of 42 hours per week. You may register for a maximum of 42 ECTS per semester.
Please note: if you have more than one study programme at the Faculty of Humanities, you can register for a maximum of 60 ECTS. In that case it is not necessary to submit a request.
You can sign up for the waiting list of courses that are full via the link below. After the official course registration period has ended, you can only sign up for the waiting list for your programme’s compulsory courses (= not for electives).
For compulsory courses:
You will only be placed in elective courses if a place becomes available. We recommend that you register for an additional elective course so that you have a back-up option.
In a limited number of cases, it may be possible to switch tutorial groups, under the condition that there are still places in the group of your choosing. Placement in another tutorial group cannot be guaranteed.
When you register for a course, you are automatically registered for the exam.
You can find more information about the regulations for exams and resits in Part A of the Teaching and Examination Regulations (OER), Article 4, Assessment and examinations.
If you wish to resit a (final) examination that you have already passed, please inform the lecturer within five working days of the examination’s inspection session.
Please note: in the event of a resit, the most recent result will apply.
A Humanities major student can sign up for the waiting list of a compulsory course via SIS up until one week after the semester has started. If the registration takes place after the official course registration period, placement is not guaranteed. You will be informed of whether you have been placed in the course and, if you have been placed, which tutorial group you have been placed in, prior to the start of the first lecture. The faculty strives to prevent study delays.
After the course registration period is over, you will have the opportunity to register for courses in which places are still available via uva.nl/courseregistration. We will publish an overview of courses in which places might still be available on this webpage after the conclusion of the official course registration period. Obviously, you do need to meet the entry requirements in order to be able to register for these courses.
You have already been registered for the courses in the first semester of the first academic year. From the second semester on, you will need to register for the courses yourself. You will receive more information about the procedure prior the registration period.
