Film Studies (Media Studies)

The Master's in Film Studies is a unique programme that offers a theoretically rigorous exploration of the field of film studies and visual culture. The programme approaches the study of film as a multifaceted phenomenon – one that plays a vital and ever-changing role in contemporary digital media culture – while training you as a student to critically and effectively engage with important shifts in film and cinema culture.

Is Film Studies right for you?

  1. You wish to study in an environment with many festivals, a rich cinematic tradition, archives, museums and cultural institutions. Thriving venues for film and media culture include the Dutch Film Institute EYE, the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and the International Rotterdam Film Festival (IFFR), as well as many local cinemas and exhibition spaces.
  2. You are able to read and understand complex theoretical texts, are self-motivated, and can work independently.
  3. You would like to engage in intensive research seminars on specialised film topics.
  4. You look forward to working with our media partners such as EYE Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, and Netherlands Film Fund.
